Located 20 minutes from the Banff and Lake Louise sites in Banff National Park, Castle Mountain dominates the view between the two places. James Hector named the mountain because its steep cliffs and ledges made the mountain look just like a castle.
The mountain was later named to honor Dwight Eisenhower but 20 years later, an Albertan premier reinstated the original name, Castle Mountain. A peak on the mountain is now known as Eisenhower Peak.
Castle Mountain's elevation is 7,458 feet and has a 2,833-foot vertical drop.
