Sulphur Mountain is located in Banff National Park, on the west shore of the Bow River across from Banff's town centre.
It was named for the sulphur smell of the hot springs at its base. The mountain is made of porous rock that allows rainfall and snowmelt to trickle through, warm up from the heat of the earth's core and rise back up to the surface through hot springs.
In November 1883, three railway workers noticed steam rising from the side of Sulphur Mountain. They immediately tried to capitalize on it by attempting to obtain homestead and mineral rights. The federal government purchased concession rights, and set aside 25-kilometres of land named Banff Hot Springs Preserve. Two years later, the reserve was expanded and renamed Rocky Mountain Park (now Banff National Park), Canada's first national park.
The story of Sulphur Mountain lends itself well to our Level One training, where you will learn how mental toughness is important in achieving goals, the difference between assertiveness and aggression and why you need to know it, and how to write a solid game plan to achieve your goals.
